Current Situation of Japanese Green Tea

🟠 Domestic Market Shrinkage ↘︎

In Japan, declining birth rates, an aging population, and lifestyle changes have led to decreased consumption of Japanese tea. Young people are increasingly moving away from green tea, favoring other beverages instead.

🟠 Expansion of Overseas Markets ↗️

Abroad, rising health awareness has brought attention to Japanese tea as a “healthy beverage,” increasing its demand. Matcha and green tea are particularly popular in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
🟠 Aging of the Tea Industry ↗️

The average age of tea farmers and workers in the tea industry is high, with a shortage of successors posing a serious issue. Efforts to encourage young people to enter the tea industry are essential for its future sustainability.

🟠 Gap Between Large and Small-Scale Companies ⚖️

Large tea companies, with the capacity for mass production and well-developed export systems, have found success in overseas markets. However, small and medium-sized tea producers, who focus on quality, struggle with mass production and face challenges entering the export market.

Our Vision

The culture of Japanese tea is remarkable, with a long history. However, there is a growing trend among younger generations to be less familiar with tea culture and drink less tea in daily life. Alongside an aging tea industry workforce, Japan’s domestic tea market is shrinking, and the number of small- and medium-sized tea farms is decreasing significantly. This trend can even be seen in Kyoto. Although the overseas market is expanding, small- and medium-sized tea producers struggle to enter it, and currently, only large tea companies have been able to make meaningful inroads. If this problem goes unresolved, these farms risk diminishing significantly.

We believe the key to addressing this issue lies in how the younger generation, the creators of future trends, engage with it. That’s why we work closely with outstanding Japanese tea farmers to promote the products of many small- and medium-sized tea producers. Through various initiatives, we aim to share the charm of tea culture all over the world, powered by the younger generation's passion.

We envision Japanese tea culture not simply being preserved as it has always been but evolving into a new cultural form as it gains recognition and popularity in this globalized world. We look forward to seeing how this new form of tea culture develops. In this transitional period, we are committed to supporting this cultural evolution and to continuing the legacy of Japanese tea culture.
